The humble beginnings of ourdodgers.com

The conceptual foundation for ourdodgers.com began being disucssed among a small group of friends during the fall of 2007. In March 2008, testing began to ascertain the viability of the project. Once it was determined that ourdodgers.com could be a reality, we swung into full production and had the doors open in April 2008. At that point, we were a small community messageboard plopped up on the web with very little fanfare and no features. While we continued to grow through word of mouth, we were not actively seeking new board members or dedicating ourselves to climbing the search engine lists.

Founder, Site Administrator

My love affair with the Los Angeles Dodgers began during the 1978-79 season as a high school kid growing up in Phoenix, Arizona. This was long before the Diamondbacks came into existence, so the Dodgers were for all intents and purposes the local team. My grandmother, a passionate fan herself, introduced me to Vin Scully's seemless audio-mastery on the local AM station KTAR 620. I was quickly hooked, and would lie in bed on school nights listening to the game and post game show (sorry Mom). Thirty years later, the Los Angeles Dodgers have not only become a part of my identity, but they have inspired me to pursue something of a dream career. But more about that later.

On the personal side of the Chuck equation, I'm married to the most beautiful career woman in the world. I didn't let my mug mess up my two kids too bad--they're lookers like their Mama! I schooled too much and drank too little. Besides baseball, I love making sawdust in the shop, contemplating the nature of things (a remnant of my edumacation), and just about anything to do with technology. I have a cool cat. I love cats, and I'm not ashamed to show my scars. I have a great dog, in spite of my general inadequacy as a dog owner. Friends and backyard BBQs rank up their pretty high too. To be honest, I like being alive and figure being dead is probably not as fun.

My vision for ourdodgers.com has grown considerably since we were a merry band of fans seeking civil discussion on the internet. Through a series of discussions with co-founder Ken Levingston, we watched the initial idea take on a life of its own until it was nearly overwhelming. But, we decided not only was the idea doable, but it's something we'd be proud to set into motion. So, our intention now is to provide Dodger fans all over the world access to a wealth of information presented in a dynamic explosion of content and visual stimulus, an interactive community connecting a greater base of passionate Dodger fans, and "peer" merchandising where you're not buying your Dodger gear from some conglomerate conveyor-belt shop who doesn't even know what it means to be a Dodger fan. You're buying that watch from a guy who KNOWS how cool that watch is, and he'd stop you on the street to tell you. That's the first thing I want people to know about our website. We're Dodger fans--crazy, screaming, flag waving Dodger fans. That's going to be true whether you're discussing pitching on the MessageBoard, listening to a podcast recapping the week, or shopping in the ourdodgers.com online store. When you're dealing with us, what you see is what you get.

It was in 1977 when my passion for the Los Angeles Dodgers was ignited. Enjoying the game of the week with my father, 6 year old Ken (I'm talking about myself in the 3rd person now) watched the Dodgers beat the Cincinnati Reds on two Steve Garvey home runs. From that moment on, I knew I had found something that would forever be a huge part of my life. Thirty-two years later, I'm still here. I've worked in other fields along the way just like everyone else, of course, but I always thought how cool it would be to be associated with the Dodgers in some way. When I became involved with ourdodgers.com and the people here, I started getting the feeling this may be my best opportunity to have a career that in some way connected me with many of the things that are most important to me in my life. I had to go for it!

Growing up bleeding Dodger blue isn't easy when you live so far from the Los Angeles area. It was hard just to keep up with Dodger baseball. Back in the 70's there was no ESPN and very few televised games. Heck, I was lucky to to see five or six games during the course of a season. So instead, I would follow the team through daily box scores in the local newspaper. I remember as a very young kid reading the box score from the night before, closing my eyes, and replaying the game in my mind based on what I had read in the paper. At the age of 10, I told my grandparents that if they took me to L.A. for my birthday, I would never ask for anything again for Christmas or subsequent birthdays. They, like my entire family, were fully aware of my love for the Dodgers. They brought me to Los Angeles and we attended two games at Dodger Stadium. It was like I had died and gone to heaven. Since then, I have attended dozens of Dodger games in L.A. and other towns such as Houston and Atlanta.

In partnering with Chuck here on ourdodgers.com, my immediate goal is to bring the joy of Dodger baseball to people like myself...people who live outside of Los Angeles but who live, breathe, and eat all things Dodgers. To that end, we have members representing five countries and most of the 50 states. The Dodgers do indeed have international appeal and it is my goal to help provide a place where Dodger fans from Los Angeles to freakin' Lithuania can gather and communicate, get real time news and information, and purchase merchandise from the online store as they show their loyalty to the team we all love.

In my personal life, I am recently married to a wonderful woman who has taken a real interest in the team. Since we started dating, she has taken two trips with me to L.A. to witness the glory of Dodger Stadium and to take in some games. I also have a beautiful daughter, 8, who in June 2009 made her first trip to L.A. I was a very proud daddy leading her into Dodger Stadium for the first time. Needless to say, she LOVED it.

One more thing. I am grateful for the interest and loyalty our members have shown to the site. We are a site created BY Dodger fans FOR Dodger fans. You will not find any Astros, Braves, Giants, or Yankees merchandise here. We are loyal to the Dodgers and we respect Dodger tradition. For that reason, I hope you will find this site to be the only one you need for news, information, communication, and merchandise. Ken Levingston
